Houghton County Mining Accident Reports

Michigan counties had a county appointed Mine Inspector.  Part of their duties were to tour the mines and report annually the accidents and deaths that occurred.  These were generally published yearly and cover October 1st to September 30th of the next year.  Mining reports exist for the years 1889 - 1971.  The beginning years are online. Updated July 09, 2006

Index of Names
Michigan Mining School
From the front cover of the 1894 booklet.

There is an index at the beginning of each book to all the deaths that include the person's name, date of accident, mine, occupation and nationality. There is also a report of the accidents that happened that include the date, mine, names of those involved, a description of the accident and rulings from the court which had a jury involved in the later pages of the books.

Colleen Caudle has come on board to help get the indexes at the beginning of the books online.
